Everything you need to know about universities, admissions, and student life to plan your journey to Germany.
Germany offers research universities, universities of applied sciences and specialist institutions. Many public programs have comparatively low tuition, but admission is academically specific and the full study budget still matters. Check qualification recognition, subject prerequisites, teaching language and student visa funding requirements before deciding that a course is suitable.
Students can choose between research-oriented and more applied academic structures. Traditional universities commonly offer a broad range of disciplines and doctoral research. Universities of applied sciences, often called Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften or Fachhochschulen, generally emphasise applied teaching and projects. Arts and music institutions have their own portfolio or audition requirements.
Independent study is important. Courses can combine lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratories and examinations, with substantial reading and preparation outside scheduled teaching. Compare the department's modules, research facilities, assessment methods and academic support rather than assuming that all institutions use the same teaching model.
Bachelor's degrees: Usually three to four years. The exact duration depends on the credit structure and discipline. Some regulated subjects use a different qualification route.
Master's degrees: Commonly one to two years. Many are consecutive programs requiring a closely related bachelor's degree and specified prior credits. Other programs have different entry requirements and may charge tuition.
Doctoral degrees: Involve original research, either through an individual supervision arrangement or a structured doctoral program. Entry, funding and duration depend on the research route.
Studienkolleg: A preparatory route for applicants whose school qualification does not provide direct entry. The course normally leads to an assessment that establishes eligibility for the relevant subject area. Admission to a Studienkolleg is not the same as admission to the final degree.
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, or ECTS, describes academic workload. When applying to a master's, both the total credits and the content of previous study may matter. A strong overall grade does not replace missing subject prerequisites.
Engineering and technology options include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automotive engineering, civil engineering, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Read the required prior modules closely. A master's in computer science may expect formal credits in algorithms, theoretical computing and mathematics rather than only short training certificates.
Business options include management, economics, finance, business analytics, supply chain management and MBA programs. Economics and quantitative business courses may require specific mathematics and statistics preparation. MBA programs can have experience requirements and different tuition arrangements from consecutive public-university master's degrees.
Other areas include biotechnology, environmental science, public health, architecture, design, education, humanities and social sciences. For research study, assess supervisor availability and the fit between your proposed project and the department's work.
Check whether the program is completely English-taught, completely German-taught or uses both languages. The language shown in a search filter may not explain every elective, assessment or compulsory component.
Examples include the Technical University of Munich and LMU Munich, RWTH Aachen University, Heidelberg University, Technische Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Dresden and the University of Bonn. Universities of applied sciences offer additional options across the country.
These are examples rather than a ranking or a list of eCampus Buddy partners. Compare the course at its actual campus and read the current faculty admission regulations. Fees and entry requirements can differ even between programs at the same public university.
Check whether your previous qualification provides the required level of access. Official recognition resources and university guidance can help you understand the likely route, but the admitting institution makes the final academic decision.
For undergraduate study, a foreign school certificate may provide direct access, subject-restricted access or access through preparatory study. Do not assume that completing school in any country automatically gives direct entry to every German bachelor's degree.
For master's study, universities often examine the subject content of the bachelor's degree in detail. Prepare module descriptions or syllabi if requested. If the course requires a minimum number of credits in a particular subject, ask how your previous study will be assessed before submitting a speculative application.
The Academic Evaluation Centre, or APS, verifies relevant Indian academic documents for the applicable admission and visa process. Check whether your applicant category requires APS and begin early. The APS certificate does not replace university admission or guarantee a visa.
For specified Indian undergraduate routes from winter semester 2026–27, the updated eligibility framework uses a minimum 70 percent overall in Class XII. Class XII with APS can support the relevant subject-restricted Studienkolleg route. Class XII, APS and one successfully completed year of recognised bachelor's study can support subject-restricted direct admission in the previous or a related field. These statements describe those particular routes, not every possible Indian qualification pathway; the university must confirm your eligibility.
For selected Indian master's applicants whose previous degrees fall within engineering; commerce, accounting, finance or economics; or business and management, the Digital Master Test, or dMAT, forms part of APS documentation for summer semester 2027 and later intakes. Transitional exemptions include APS registration or document shipment before 29 June 2026 and already completed APS procedures. Check the affected-field classification and your dates before starting. The test does not replace APS verification, degree recognition or the university's admission decision.
Most institutions use winter and summer semesters. At many universities, winter teaching begins around October and summer teaching around April; universities of applied sciences and individual courses can use different dates. Some programs admit only for the winter semester.
Deadlines such as 15 July and 15 January are common reference points, but they are not universal. International, master's, scholarship and preparatory applications can close much earlier. Use the exact deadline for your applicant category and program.
Begin approximately twelve months ahead, allowing time for language tests, APS where required, academic evaluation, university applications, funding and the visa. If a preliminary review document is needed, build in enough time to receive it and still submit the university application before its deadline.
Bachelor's admission depends on the recognised school qualification, required subjects, grades and language level. Some programs are capacity-restricted or use additional selection methods. Preparatory study may require an entrance examination and German proficiency.
Master's applicants generally need a recognised bachelor's degree, the required subject preparation and an acceptable grade. Three-year degrees can be eligible for some programs, but the university may require a particular credit volume or academic background. Do not assume that a degree's duration alone determines acceptance.
Selected courses require GRE, GMAT, a portfolio, an interview or evidence of experience. Research applicants may need a proposal, previous thesis and supervision agreement. Use the program's current admissions regulations rather than relying solely on a general international admissions page.
German-taught courses may accept recognised evidence such as TestDaF, DSH or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, subject to the university's rules and required scores. A certificate that is useful for general language learning may not meet university admission requirements.
English-taught courses commonly use IELTS Academic, TOEFL or another specifically accepted test. Required scores and component thresholds vary. Some institutions accept previous English-medium education under defined conditions, but others require a test regardless.
A Studienkolleg commonly requires German even if your eventual degree goal is an English-taught program. Confirm the preparatory institution's entry and examination language. For the visa, provide the language evidence appropriate to your admission and course as required by the current mission checklist.
Universities may accept applications directly or use uni-assist to review international qualifications. Some require a Vorprüfungsdokumentation, or VPD, from uni-assist before you apply to the university yourself. Receiving a VPD is not an admission offer and may not complete the university application.
Prepare your passport, school and university records as applicable, completion certificates, language evidence, grading information and any required APS certificate. A CV, motivation letter, module descriptions, portfolio, proposal or references may also be required. Follow the exact instructions for certified copies and translations.
The usual uni-assist handling charge is EUR 75 for the first chosen study course in a semester and EUR 30 for each additional course, although some universities cover the charge. Check the fee arrangements before submission. Payment alone does not mean that an application is complete.
After admission, note the acceptance deadline, enrolment documents, semester contribution and insurance requirements. Keep the original admission decision for the visa stage.
Many public universities do not charge general tuition for standard degree programs, but Germany is not universally tuition-free. Semester contributions are normally separate from tuition, and private institutions and certain public programs charge substantial fees.
Important examples include Baden-Württemberg, where many non-EU students are charged EUR 1,500 per semester, subject to exemptions. At the Technical University of Munich, tuition for newly enrolled students from relevant third countries is program-specific; many master's courses use EUR 4,000 or EUR 6,000 per semester, with applicable exceptions and exemptions. Check your exact course and applicant category.
Calculate the entire degree cost using the number of semesters, any tuition, semester contributions, language preparation and other mandatory course charges. Add language tests, qualification evaluation, APS where applicable, books, equipment, insurance, visa charges and travel.
The blocked-account amount is money for your own maintenance, not an additional tuition fee paid to the university. Avoid counting it twice when building the budget. Also allow for the account provider's own setup or service charges where applicable.
The German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD, offers scholarships under different programs, each with its own nationality, subject, academic and timing requirements. A DAAD scholarship is not automatically available for every bachelor's or master's applicant.
Universities, foundations and research programs may offer additional awards. Some joint master's programs participate in Erasmus Mundus scholarship arrangements. Doctoral funding may be connected to a structured program or a specific research project.
Read the award terms carefully: covered tuition, stipend, insurance, duration, language preparation and renewal conditions may differ. Scholarship deadlines can be many months before the course application deadline. Use only a formal award as confirmed financial evidence, and ask whether it satisfies the relevant visa funding requirement.
If using a loan, confirm whether it can fund tuition and the required maintenance arrangement. Ask when funds can be released and whether the lender pays the university, a blocked account or another approved destination.
Compare interest, fees, repayment conditions, security requirements and the cost of currency conversion. A sanctioned loan does not automatically substitute for the specific financial proof accepted by the German mission. Arrange the evidence in the form required for your application.
Check that the budget covers the full course, including any paid preparatory study, semester contributions and possible additional semesters. A low tuition fee does not remove the need for a complete funding plan.
Students whose nationality requires a visa for long-term study generally apply for the appropriate national visa, often referred to as a D visa. A short-stay Schengen visitor visa is not the standard route for completing a degree in Germany.
For an admitted student's application, the central documents commonly include a valid passport, the admission letter, academic records, required language proof, financial evidence and health insurance for the required period. The mission may request a CV, motivation statement, APS evidence and other documents according to your circumstances.
Use the current checklist for the German mission responsible for your place of residence. Admission to a university and approval of a visa are separate decisions. Applications for applicants still seeking a study place have different conditions, so do not use their funding figures for an admitted-student application.
For the standard admitted-student route, the maintenance requirement in 2026 is EUR 11,904 for a year, equivalent to EUR 992 a month. Tuition, if charged, is additional. Confirm the amount again when applying or renewing because it can change.
A blocked account is a common way to demonstrate this funding. The account restricts access so that a monthly allowance is released during the study period. The deposited maintenance funds remain intended for your own expenses; they are not a visa fee.
Other accepted forms of evidence may include a qualifying scholarship or a formal declaration of commitment. Acceptance depends on the official requirements. An ordinary sponsor letter or bank statement should not be assumed to replace the required form of financial proof.
Health insurance is relevant both to the visa period and university enrolment. Ask the university how proof of insurance must be submitted and whether the cover you have selected meets its enrolment requirements.
Use eCampus Buddy to compare suitable academic routes, organise qualification documents and plan each application stage. Start with recognition and subject eligibility, then build the funding and student visa timeline around the confirmed course.
Answers to what students most often ask before applying to study in Germany.
Many public programs have no general tuition, but exceptions are significant. Semester contributions, insurance and maintenance costs still apply, and some public and private programs charge tuition.
Compare the curriculum and learning approach. Research universities often provide a stronger theoretical or research focus, while universities of applied sciences commonly emphasise applied projects. The specific course matters most.
English-taught programs exist, particularly at master's level. Confirm that all compulsory elements can be completed in English and that you meet the course's accepted language requirement.
Usually the preparatory route requires German, even when your later degree goal is English-taught. Check the particular Studienkolleg's admission and examination language.
Not necessarily. Your qualification may lead to direct, subject-restricted or preparatory access. Have the route confirmed using the current recognition criteria and university requirements.
The 70 percent threshold applies to the specified routes introduced for winter 2026–27. Other recognised qualification pathways need separate assessment; the threshold alone does not establish admission eligibility.
Possibly. The university assesses recognition, total credits and subject content. Check the exact degree and module requirements before applying.
Many consecutive master's programs require a closely related bachelor's background. Look for an explicitly suitable conversion or interdisciplinary course if your prior subject differs.
No. APS concerns verification of relevant academic documents. You still need to apply to the university and complete its selection process.
Selected Indian master's applicants in the affected fields need it for summer 2027 and later intakes, subject to transitional exemptions. Check your previous degree classification and APS application dates.
It reviews applications or qualifications for participating universities. The university makes the admission decision. A positive preliminary review is not an offer.
Usually you must still submit it through the university's own application process by the deadline. Follow that university's instructions carefully.
No. Those months are common reference points, but many international, master's and scholarship deadlines are earlier or different. Use the exact program calendar.
Only for programs that require it. There is no general test requirement covering all German master's degrees.
For the standard admitted-student route in 2026, the annual maintenance amount is EUR 11,904. Confirm the current requirement and any account-provider charges before transferring money.
No. It is restricted access to your own maintenance funds, normally released in monthly amounts. Tuition and account service charges are separate.
A qualifying scholarship may provide accepted financial evidence. Check whether its amount and documentation satisfy the mission's requirements or whether additional proof is needed.
No. The loan must result in financial evidence in an accepted form. Confirm the arrangement with the current visa checklist before relying on it.
Yes, appropriate insurance evidence is part of the study and enrolment process. The university can explain the required confirmation and how to coordinate it with arrival cover.
Ask the university about its latest arrival date and possible deferral. Obtain updated documents where necessary instead of assuming that an old admission letter remains valid for a new semester.
